How to Get a First Page Ranking on Google

  1. Jon, KILLER Title and bullets in the email. I’m going to pass this on to my list. Got an affiliate program for GuestBlogging?

  2. Yep, this works well…although some blogs don’t accept SEO’d bylines. (Daily Blog Tips, for example, won’t.)

By the way, I’m not seeing pluginid.com on the first page for “personal development”. see it as #12. Anyone else seeing this?

    -Erica

    • Looks like he’s been bumped to the 2nd page

    • eric says:

      god you’re fucking hot!!!

    • A couple things:

1.) PluginID was sold and Glen no longer runs the site, therefore he does not do anymore SEO work for it, the new owner must either be up against stiffer competition or isn’t putting in as much work.

2.) As effective as this strategy is, the video is perhaps a little misleading (Note: Jon Morrow is a super smart guy and you should listen to everything he says).

The screenshot that Jon shows for the monthly searches for “Personal Development” is NOT set to [exact], it is set to broad match.

The exact searches per month (ie people who are inputting the term “personal development” exactly) is a lot lower.

Still though, it’s a very tough term to rank for and it’s quite an accomplishment, Glen and Jon are two of the best people to be learning how to do this from as well!

    • Praveen Kumar says:

Hey , Erica i have noticed that Stuff ,
The blog pluginid.com is not ranked in the first page of google for the keyword keyword “personal development” , It seem to be it only saw on michael’s web history because the new google will support the auto-ranking based up on the recent site visit through google.

  3. Wow, that’s a really great tip! I had already thought of how guest blogging would help in SEO by linking to your site, but I never thought to use a popular keyword as the anchor text. I’ve been working on a few guest posts, and I’m planning on submitting my first one to a pretty popular blog next week, so this came just in time for me. Will have to make the correction, and be careful not to use a term too competitive, so it will still help.

Thanks for this video series, it really helps to shed a lot of insightful of how to really grow a popular blog.

  4. Thanks Jon! This is so simple, yet so powerful and achievable! Can’t wait ’til the next video!

  5. That might be the BEST explanation of how SEO works I’ve ever heard! :D

    Thanks, Jon. Again!!

    Heather

  6. I’ve been watching Glen for some time and noticed this a while back. I saw all the guest articles and noticed the anchor text specifically. Glen really knows what he’s doing.

    Great strategy, and great video.

  7. Hmmm, Erica, did now know that some blogs don’t accept this-good to ask beforehand.

  8. @Erica Douglass

I’m seeing that, too. Perhaps the screenshots were taken a few days or a week or two ago (Jon mentioned he uses mainly powerpoint and Movie Maker for these videos, so it’s likely the production was started far before he actually recorded the video).

  9. Jon Morrow says:

@Erica: The search engine rankings fluctuate, depending on which server you’re going through and your own search history. I’ve seen the site ranked as high as sixth and as low as twelve.

Plus, Glen did this a long time ago, before he sold the site. It’s actually pretty amazing it’s still ranked anywhere close to the top. Shows the power of just a few trusted links. :-)

  10. Jack Rugile says:

This is a great strategy. It is a legitimate and earned link that you can shape however you like. Of course, that is if it’s allowed by the blog you are guest posting on, as Erica said.

I think the hardest part is picking and committing to one phrase or keyword. Research beforehand is definitely key.

  11. Mars Dorian says:

that’s brilliant, Jon – I have never even thought about this.

Damn, I want to marry this video series.

  12. Marsha Stopa says:

    Jon,

    Brilliantly simple.

Some of the terms I want to rank for, “seasonal depression,” “light therapy” are dominated by 1) medical institutions or 2) smart manufacturers with Google Adword budgets I don’t have.

I had given up trying to compete with them, but this strategy could bring me a lot closer to the first page of a Google search.

    Thank you!

  13. Ryan says:

Awesome videos! I knew that guest blogging was powerful but didn’t realize the full SEO benefits until watching these videos.

  14. Jon. It is killing me that I can’t view these videos on my iPhone. Any way we could get a QuickTime version? I would be more than happy to pay the $267 in 3G fees just to see them!

    • Another Marketing Consultant says:

Watch these videos in iPhone by downloading the SkyFire App – best investment I ever made!

  15. DaNae says:

What an informational video! Thanks for spending your time to put that together.

I’ve been writing for a popular website with a page rank of 6. I’m allowed links in the bio.

I saw a huge traffic increase after writing 6 articles for this website.

    Some quick questions…

1 – Is it okay to write 10-15 articles for the same website. Or should we be spreading the guest posting over several websites?

2 – What if I have 4 or more keyword links going back to my site in the author bio line? It’s okay with the site, but is that effective for my site.

    Thanks!

  16. @DaNae: I don’t see anything wrong with 1 or 2. With regards to 2, they’re still backlinks with anchor texts, so yea, if the blog has authority, it will help you.

  17. Anne Gaal says:

Hi, Jon! Super videos! You have me sold that Guest Blogging is a key strategy! :-)

  18. Hey Jon,
Of course! Glenn has fabulous ideas–great example. I got so much out of his Cloud Living when it came out.

  19. Jon Morrow says:

@Farnoosh: Check out this post I recently published on Copyblogger. It talks all about how to fit guest blogging into your schedule:

    http://www.copyblogger.com/write-less/

  20. Another great video, thanks Jon! Got a question about how you make the videos — what program do you use for the text/graphics/animation?

  21. Excellent tip Jon! I’m making a list of words I want to rank for & then the next step is to start gust blogging, already have a bunch of offers to write. Lovin’ your series man, cheers!

  22. Tom Bentley says:

Man oh man (and woman oh woman)—it’s great to get refreshingly clear and simple advice on subjects that can be a bit mind-boggling in their mechanics, like SEO. Even I can understand this stuff!

Now to get to the guest-blogging part…

  23. Jimi Jones says:

So simple, but so powerful. This is a great tip. This provides yet another reason to be guest posting.

  24. Bert Cave says:

Thanks, Jon. Another good one. SEO is such a major task for all of us. Bert

  25. Raza says:

White hat SEO’s have been using this strategy forever. You can enhance the effect by submitting articles to article directories and pinging the RSS feed of the article. That way it has the potential to be syndicated around the world resulting in lots of backlinks.

This isn’t the only way to get backlinks to your site, but it’s one of the safest and most effective there is.

  26. Fred Rye says:

Really interesting material. Can’t wait to try it.

  27. Skyler Meine says:

Great idea. Makes me want to do more guest posts.

  28. It seems odd how something as effective as guest blogging has gone so little noticed to so many bloggers for so long.

I wonder how a broader knowledge about guest blogging will affect the blogesphere.

  29. Andy Fogarty says:

    Awesome stuff as usual.

Good timing too. Time to go change some anchor text before hitting send :-)

  30. Pete Carr says:

    Thanks Jon,

    Another great video.
I am looking forward to your course.

    Pete

  31. L says:

Oh yikes, wrong use of effect/affect! Sorry, I can’t help myself…

  32. L says:

    I should add that it’s a great video! Sorry, I’m a stickler :)

  33. peggy says:

Thanks Jon, you are the best. I am loving the video’s. Thankyou thankyou…Peggy

  34. Mike Sigers says:

Jon, you’re cadence, timing, phraseology and all the rest of that jazz makes your voice perfect for audio.

    Glad you’re doing these screencaps!

  35. Thanks for the excellent information. I am really loving your videos

  36. good luck on the launch. This guy lives in south africa now and is like 22 years old and has a growing seo blog.

We have a great example of a guest post that hit over 250k views from 4 hr work week. See case study at http://www.searchenginejournal.com/why-duplicate-content-is-good-for-you/22270/ maybe we could help share some examples for your future members to use the power of humor in guest posts.

  37. carrie says:

Thanks John, very interesting, I’m going to try this out. Wondering if you can have multiple anchor words, or if it works better just for one? For example, I’m a writer/content producer, but also provide other services, so am I better off using writer or copywriter?

PS Interested in what screencasting program you are using, I like the quality and am exploring different ones, thanks!

  38. Brilliant! You are really getting us to think ‘outside-of-the-box’ and I like it! Thanks, Jon, for sharing your knowledge and cheering us all on to be even more successful bloggers.

  39. Tracey says:

Good video again … I hadn’t really thought about just WHAT the link term should be. Your videos have really started to focus my thinking now. Thanks.

  40. Super Awesome and simple advice, I have just started writing guest posts but never thought of this idea at all, but it makes perfect sense.

  41. Thanks. Honestly, because of your common sense and heartful delivery, I’m “in” – what’re you going to send on August 9th? ha ha

I am trying to work this concept for myself. The niche I will write for is a small portion of the pie for a HUGE slice, beauty blogs.

It will be hard to even get requests from me to guestblog considered, but I will keep at it.

One tactic I thought of was inviting other bloggers to guest on *my* blog. Doesn’t the link/SEO factor the same in reverse? Found one successful, very provocative blogger that agreed; thought it’d be fun. I am stoked!

  42. Jay Lauser says:

I am absolutely blown away by this series! I am not only confident that my business will do well thanks to you, I am absolutely certain it will surpass my expectations (how does that work… really? :D ).

Thank you for taking the time to do this for us.

  43. I hope when you’re finished with this series, you hold our hands in a few more. Love the simplicity and style you bring to your work, Jon.

  44. Jon,

Glen Allsop is a genius. But he (or actually Bud Hennekes, if Glen is completely removed from PluginID) owes you a huge “WASSUP!!” because since you filmed your video, PluginID has almost DOUBLED IN SUBSCRIBERS!! They’re up to 7633 right now!
“I rest my case.” – Jon Morrow
You pretty much just proved the power of being featured on a powerful blog with a lot of traffic, even if Glen wasn’t doing an official guest post for guestblogging.com. Bravo.

    Thanks again,
    Justin

  45. Josh Gibbs says:

Jon, you are probably the smartest person on the internet right now.

  46. Impressive watch- thanks for sharing this one.

I personally think many people give up on guest blogging primarily for the fact that they think that writing a guest post is only good if you do so for the Big Blogs. I think they should eye an spot on lesser known, this helps in garnering loyalty of readers. Plus these smaller blogs have a more loyal readership and chances are high that these readers will follow you to your site, provided your content is worth it.

  47. Darren says:

This is pathetic and in the same time typical for a Copyblogger writer. You list a single ‘case study’ and make a generalization out of it on ‘how to get on the first page on Google’.

Well, dear Sir, if you ever studied statistics 101 you’ll know that a SINGLE CASE STUDY IS FAR FROM ENOUGH. In order to make a conclusion ‘this is what it takes to get on the first page on Google’ you need to get at least 100 people who consistently ranked on Google through guest posting. And you don’t have even 2. An easier way is to do a simple split test and take 25 people who use black hat tactic vs. people who use guest blogging (for you, working for Copyblogger, wouldn’t it be so hard to find people like these.)

But no, you’d better spread BS advice to the masses than do your research.

    POINT NUMBER 1:

That blog no longer ranks for ‘personal development’. It is on page 2 now, position 11. Where did you take this video? It wasn’t before August because I checked the website with SemRush (latest update of semrush database was in August) and then it ranked #9.

I see on your video that it ranks higher. Did you check you have personalized results turned off? That would a big, big mistake for someone who claims can show ‘how to get your blog a first page ranking on Google’.

I am astounded nobody of the people who commented above didn’t notice this and I’m starting to doubt whether the comments are a) fake b) wrote by your friends or blind-following fans c) generally, copyblogger readers where you write where you all spread pseudo-scientific advice that has to do 0% with reality.

    POINT NUMBER 2:

DID YOU FAILED SCIENCE AT SCHOOL? Yes, I guess you’re a follower of the pseudo-scientific advice of Jay Abraham etc. who tell you ‘not to mention disadvantages’ although, objectively, there are a lot of disadvantages to your ‘method of ranking #1′. Maybe you should forget about those pseudo marketers and switch to Cialdini who says that mentioning disadvantages actually establishes trust (and you also don’t come as a deceiver!) and his book 50 ways to be persuasive.

    POINT NUMBER #3

Your advice on how Google works was good for total beginners. For beginner-to-intermediates, there are several flaws. First, there is a big correlation between the number of unique root domains linking to you (see seomoz.org study on this) and rankings. So, put in your terms, 50 average-trusted friends will get you the same, if not bigger ranking than 3-5 highly trusted friends.

This video was a big turn off for me. I was hopieng to hear something objective and good on how to guest post on blogs (myself being a seasoned guest poster posting on some very popular web design blogs and also ex-poster on makeuseof which is now the top 1000 most visited website in the world according to alexa/compete) but all I heard was the typical copyblogger BS type of stuff. I guess it’s true when they say you’re the average of your 5 best friends…

  48. Great information. Simple is always best isn’t it?

    Many thanks

  49. Lisa says:

The list you showed in this video of search terms and frequency, where was that generated from? I’m writing a guest blog and am trying to find the best popular term to chose.

  50. LoneWolf says:

@Marsha Stopa — have you looked into keywords that have 3 or more words rather than just 2? Maybe things like “dealing with seasonal depression” instead of just “seasonal depression” might be easier to rank for.

@Darren — I guess you don’t understand that this is a sales video, not a teaching product. You also didn’t read the comments since at least 2 people commented on the positioning of pluginid.com and Jon actually responded to it.

  51. Jon!! I’m really glad I joing your RSS
because this way I can take advantage of your posting to use it in developement of Mobile Monopoly Web Marketing strategies.

I would like to ask you if there is a list of the top ten guess blogging site that you can recommend?

  52. Jon,

Thank you very much for these videos – clear, simple

And one of the things I love about this concept is that it is not about manipulating the system but gaining through contributions that really benefit everyone – “Big Blogger”, guest blogger, and most of all readers.

I do a lot of SEO work and so much of it loses sight of the simple give and receive concept crystalized in your videos.

Great contribution – can’t wait to apply it.

    Sarah

  53. Perfect explanation. This tip makes sense and I’m going to do it! Thank you!

  54. Chase Adams says:

Hey Jon, this series is great! Thanks so much for putting the time into getting this out to us!

Just a little funny side note: @ 2:50, There’s a guy named Anna, and a girl named Fernando. Too good. :)

  55. kerri twigg says:

Thanks for that great SEO explanation — I’m a visual learner, so it helped a lot.

    Cheers,
    Kerri

  56. Rick says:

    Hey Jon,
    I heard your on Jeff’s coaching call…
    I think Jeff rumbled you.
I also think that, in your launch, you lost me just before the sales pitch because the offer was vague… to me at any rate. I was a bit suspicious and thinking “has this guy got something I need” etc, and then you didn’t give me enough to get me thinking “Yep… this deal looks cool”. I hope this helps… but do you really need to disguise yourself? It isn’t good in the long run I don’t think…

  57. Anne says:

I will have to go over this more than a few times I feel before I get the gist of it properly, but thankyou, it is something to start with

  58. Marcel says:

  61. Bianca says:

Thank you so much for these videos. I use to own a website that sold boutique clothing. I went the route of paying for keywords and paid advertising. It really didn’t make much of a difference. I recently started a new blog about finding deals and bargains. Guest Blogging seems the way to go. It’s great because you don’t have to put out any money and risk not making it back! I love it! Thank you so much. And if you are interested in saving money check out my blog at http://slickhousewives.com
    Thanks!

  62. I really enjoyed visiting your blog , I found it in Yahoo. I recently founda reallysweet pdf finder type site, it’s a pdf search engine and I think it is very useful for people who like reading eboks

  63. Merely wanna remark that you have a very decent website , I like the design and style it really stands out.

  64. Good tactics. I have had sites in the first page on Google but suddenly they have gone. It´s a good idea to have multiple sources of traffic spread over the blogsphere.

  65. DancingKim says:

Greetings, i’m a professional dancer. i’d like to see to make a showreel with regard to my promotions. I also want to use some animation. Can someone suggest me a superb animation studio, but not necessarily very expensive? I’m here for 3 months for a tour.

Amazing content like every other video I have seen.

Really never thought of how useful Guest Blogging was… should have known better!

Thanks for sharing this, really appreciate it.

    Sergio

  77. Good stuff, and makes sense to me. I am really far from any expert on SEO stuff though I do my reading when I can.

I get some first page results with a few terms–but I don’t know how many monthly searches there are, so maybe they aren’t that popular (have to look at that stuff). For “compassionate communication,” for example, I come up 4th, before even Wikipedia and Amazon, and I only wrote that post last week. I don’t know why except for a few guest posts and one on a fairly big blog?

Also first page for things like “silent treatment” and some others(looking on keywords used on site stats). I only have around 500 subscribers so I’m guessing those guest posts help! Have to rock some more :)

    • Marsha Stopa says:

      Leah,
